Quick Care for Your Child’s Dental Emergency

If your child is experiencing a dental emergency, whether they lost or broke a tooth while playing or if they are suddenly experiencing pain from an infection or tooth decay, we know how important it is for you to find them treatment right away. Even a relatively minor dental injury can be painful for your child, but it can also easily cause permanent damage and discomfort if it is left untreated. However, many common dental injuries have well-established treatments, meaning a dental professional will most likely be able to handle whatever problem your child is experiencing.

Most Common Children’s Dental Emergencies & Trauma

    • Cavities or decay
    • Tooth pain, pressure, or sensitivity
    • Broken teeth
    • Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
    • Abscess or infection

What to Do If Child’s Adult Tooth Is Knocked Out

If your child’s tooth is knocked-out, be very careful when handling it. Rinse it off with milk or warm water, but avoid touching the roots since it is very easy to damage them. Do not dry the tooth. It should be kept moist until a dentist can see it. The tooth is alive but will die if it dries out. Instead, hold the tooth by the crown and try to re-insert it back into the socket, if possible. If this is too difficult, put the tooth in a cup of milk, saliva, or water. Seek out a dentist who can provide emergency care as soon as possible, making sure the tooth is kept moist. You should try to get your child into treatment within an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.

At Arctic Dental, we are ready to help your child through their dental emergency.

In the event that your child requires emergency treatment, advanced behavior management techniques such as sedation may not be available. However, Dr. Jarod will conduct an exam of your child and will inform you of the risks and benefits of treatment plans and sedation. He may also suggest alternatives that are better suited to your child’s condition. Dr. Jarod places a strong emphasis on the well-being of all the children he sees, and knows that whatever he can do to put them at ease makes treatment that much easier.
